Lower School Book Week

Karen Astill, School Librarian, reviews the Lower School Book Week.

"Our dragon themed book week came to an end with a whole school assembly in which all the classes showed the rest of the school work they had created based on the workshops and story telling sessions they had had with our visiting author Debi Evans.

Debi Evans is the co-author The Secret Society of Dragon Protectors fantasy adventure series and each year group had their own workshop with her, which resulted in some fantastic creative writing, illustrations and letter writing. Debi very kindly gave all our children a piece of very special dragon ore which will help them discover any real dragons that might be hiding out there.

On Wednesday we had a book fair where the children had the opportunity to purchase new exciting titles here in Beijing. A big thank you to Friends of Harrow who provided tea, coffee and cakes for our parents, especially Laura, Lena and Plaxy.  The children were rather pleased that there were plenty of cakes for them to enjoy too!

On Thursday we held the Book Swap Shop and once again nearly 200 books were swapped between our students, the swapping of books is brilliant way to share books with our friends!

On Thursday the school was also alive with book characters from some of our favourite books, prizes for best costumes went to the following:
Alfie Chang, Winnie Johnson-Hill, Heather Wang, Rosie Dear, Sang Wook Han, Liuba Antonenko, Erick Kim, Jin Jung, Tony Kang, Charles Wang

Other prize winners included Cerys Newbold for the ‘Book Cover’ competition and Alex Smith for the ‘Missing Titles’ competition and finally our amazing dragon was given a name. Victor Yang won ‘Name the Dragon’ competition with the name ‘Harrowgon’, who now lives under the stairs in the atrium, where he is surrounded with golden treasure which show some of our favourite books.

Please pay him a visit and if the children have got their dragon ore in school they can check to see if there is a real dragon in there! Debi joined us for our assembly to present the prizes and unveil Harrowgon.

A big thank you to the dragon building team, Friends of Harrow, all the staff who helped make the week happen and of course Debi Evans for her inspiration."
