To celebrate International Women's Day, Harrow Beijing held the Mothers' and Daughters' Breakfast in the theater this morning. Over one hundred mothers and daughters attended the event, and discussed with the invited guests about women's rights and gender equality. Ms. Gao Lin, the famous writer and businesswoman, Ms. Clare Pearson, Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce, and Ms. Ching Tien, the head of the Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC), shared their opinions on gender equality with us as representatives of independent and successful women. Meanwhile, a separate breakfast was held for the boys by the male teachers, aiming to show the importance of gender equality through video.
The theme of International Women's Day in 2017 is 'BeBoldForChange'. A variety of badges were prepared with slogans supporting different women's rights at the breakfast, including 'We will be bold and challenge bias and inequality', and 'I will be bold and champion women's education'. Students and parents supported women's right by choosing their favorite badge, and wearing them proudly on their chest, and by buying carnations to share with their family and friends. All the money raised by selling carnations will be used by the Harrow Beijing Gender Equality Group to support women's rights.
At today's breakfast, we also had a special guest: Yunxia, who was born in Gansu and was funded by EGRC. Yunxia has graduated from Tongji University and joined the EGRC. During her study at the university, Yunxia received the continued financial support of EGRC, enjoying a normal life likeher peers, and had the time and energy to focus on her academic and career development. Working for two years after graduation, Yunxia decided to come back to EGRC, hoping to contribute to help more girls in Gansu to have chances for good education and freedom to choose their life out of the mountains.
On this day that celebrates women all around the world, Harrow Beijing took action to defend women's rights and freedom.
