About Us
Mr Phil Akerman Head of Harrow Beijing
Meet Our New Head
Mr Phil Akerman joins Harrow Beijing in August 2023.
Phil grew up and attended school in London before reading Chemistry at universities in both the UK and Germany. Phil took his first teaching post in London in September 2003 where he helped to raise academic standards across the school, leading to his promotion as Head of Science and then Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for teaching and learning, as well as a large Sixth Form cohort of over 400 students. Phil was promoted into his first Headteacher role in 2016, going on to drive the school’s growth from approximately 900 students to 1,870 students from Nursery through to Sixth Form – becoming the most popular school in that district of London in the process. He is used to working with large teams of teachers, support staff, students and families to ensure the best education journey possible. Phil has a real passion for delivering the highest quality education which, for him, means seeing students fulfil their academic potential whilst also developing their character, confidence and skills through a variety of programmes and opportunities.
He believes that this type of holistic education helps to foster confident, compassionate leaders who will go on to improve the world we live in. Seeing happy young people move on to top university destinations and careers is hugely satisfying and it is why he loves being Headteacher.
Mr Phil Akerman

‘Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.’ Winston Churchill, The Lord Mayor’s Luncheon, Mansion House, 10 November, 1942
In the last few weeks the Harrow Beijing community has faced some of its biggest challenges with the return of online learning, travel restrictions and the return of quarantines. Through it all our community has stood together
Yesterday I enjoyed a truly inspiring afternoon. Firstly, there was a fabulous performance by some of our gifted A Level and GCSE musicians. We moved seamlessly between Chopin and Schubert before enjoying 'Vivre' from 'Notre Dame de Paris' & ‘Someone Like You’ from ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. The Upper school audience and I were captivated. The students’ level of poise, confidence and talent were a joy to behold.
8 September,  2022 I am very fond of the expression ‘It takes a whole village to educate a child.’ Within that village it would be fair to say that teachers play an invaluable role. As this summer’s outstanding examination results and university destinations demonstrate, we have some of the most talented teachers in the world. As this new term begins, we welcome our teachers back and indeed those who are new to Harrow, Beijing. These teachers all range in age, background and experience. For some, it is their first time in China; for others, China is very much their permanent home. All have exceptional qualifications from universities including Oxford, Cambridge & New York. During their interviews, it was evident that they shared a common goal of wanting to bring the very best out in our students and that they were passionate about teaching and in particular getting the opportunity to teach at Harrow Beijing. Yesterday, as I took my daily walk through the corridors of the school both at Hegezhuang and City Campus, the classrooms were buzzing with activities and laughter. I was enthralled by the Year 1’s as they engaged in a very active mathematics lesson, whilst some of our new Lower Six got to grips with A Level Chemistry. Outside, I watched the football coaching get underway and the swimming pool was a hive of activities, as our pupils got to grips with the skills of water polo. I very much hope that over the coming weeks and months you will have the opportunity to meet these wonderful people and appreciate as I do what opportunities they provide for your children. —— Mrs Rachel Dent
There is no doubt in my mind that Harrow London is an extraordinary School. One of the main reasons for this is having a history which is 450 years old. Harrow was given its Royal Charter by Elizabeth I in 1572. From the outset the school’s founder John Lyon had a vision for what a Harrow education should be and in particular that it should be built around values and academic enrichment. Today as Harrow continues to flourish so do the children receiving this remarkable education. The present global pandemic has really reminded us all of the importance of courage, honor, humility, and fellowship. For example, I can never forget the joy when we were at last able to welcome back students to school and noting how much they enjoyed being back with their teachers. The community and fellowship at Harrow Beijing have never been stronger and I am immensely proud of all of my staff and pupils. This is a school which has grown together and where we are all committed to ensuring our students can flourish in a world which is changing with breath taking speed. Yet I am sure that John Lyon would be delighted to see our students showing the same joy in education as those first Harrow pupils. —— Mrs Rachel Dent, The Head
The Lower School is a bustling and busy environment where happy children are engaged, enthusiastic and eager to learn. We develop and nurture our students holistically to ensure that they have the skills to be successful, not only in their academic lessons but also their lives. Our curriculum is broad and our students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of subjects. Outside of the school day students can participate in our Leadership in Action programme of after school activities. It is here that they can really develop their passions and interests and broaden their horizons learning new things, whilst collaborating with their peers. We hope to instill confidence, self-worth and courage in all of our students from a young age, supporting them to challenge themselves and thrive at school. —— Ms Sarah Davey, Head of Lower School
Welcome to Harrow Beijing Upper School! We offer a diverse and enriching educational pathway, which has a strong focus on academic excellence underpinned by outstanding pastoral care to ensure all of our students fulfil their potential. Harrow Beijing Upper School is a vibrant and energetic community, where everyone is encouraged and supported to be bold, to be challenged, and to be given every opportunity to live and embody the Harrow core values of Courage, Honour, Humility and Fellowship. Students begin their Upper School journey in the Prep Phase (Years 6 - 8), where they follow an innovative and enhanced curriculum, which is broad and balanced and promotes collaborative inquiry and is reflective of our very unique and special context within the world class city of Beijing. As they progress through the school, they have the opportunity to study a range of IGCSE subjects which eventually leads onto A Level study in the Sixth Form, which is the gold standard globally for entrance to the world’s leading universities. Throughout their academic journey, students are able to develop an impressive portfolio of activities through sports, the arts, academic competitions, and philanthropic work for which the Harrow name is synonymous. As a Harrovian, all students will have access to world class teaching and learning opportunities, which will offer them a unique global perspective proudly rooted in China. —— Mr Thomas Nolan, Head of Upper School

Harrow Beijing Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care
Pastoral care is central to the school's educational provision. The pupils are provided with a tutor and are also managed within the school's House system. As such each pupil is very much managed by a team of experts including Assistant Heads, Pastoral Leads, expert Counsellors and Safeguarding Leads.
We want our pupils to lead happy and healthy lives. As such we offer a robust PSHE programme which is regularly reviewed to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our students.
We also very much recognize the value and importance of student voice. As such we have various student bodies including the Shaftesbury Society and our whole school student council.
At the heart of our pastoral care is our unwavering commitment to pupil safety. We hold it absolutely paramount: it is the foundation of everything we do. As such all of our staff are fully trained in safeguarding to an internationally recognized standard.
The House System
Harrow Beijing has six Houses. Each House is named after a leader who is known for having courage and determination.
Modelled on the Houses of Harrow School London, the House system at Harrow Beijing is central to our students’ wellbeing and all round development as they journey through their school career and progress into life beyond school.
On the first day they join the school, the students are sorted into a House. They develop a strong sense of belonging and allegiance to their House over the course of their time at Harrow Beijing. The House system is a fundamental ingredient allowing for House competitions, assemblies and activities. The emphasis is always on teamwork and fun.
