‘Now this is not the end…’

‘Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.’ Winston Churchill, The Lord Mayor’s Luncheon, Mansion House, 10 November, 1942

These words used by Old Harrowian Winston Churchill really resonated with me this week. After four incredibly challenging years Harrow, Beijing returned to school normally. It was absolutely wonderful to see staff and students so happy to finally be back in each other’s company.

The last few years have definitely demonstrated the most incredible resilience by all in our community. Staff local and international separated from friends and family for yearslong periods in which we have delivered the most extraordinary online provision but without the obvious and very necessary human contact which makes our community so distinct.

Now we move forwards with courage and fortitude. Over the coming months we are determined to give our students the very best opportunities to really enjoy their education, whilst never forgetting what has already been achieved. The school has recorded its highest academic performances and already this year’s Upper Six have places at Oxford, Cambridge & Cornell amongst others.

I would urge everyone to take a few moments in the coming few weeks to write down your own memories of this period. Those words will be a unique testament for future generations.
