Alumni Spotlight|Rebecca: Setting Sail from Harrow, Guided by Passion and Anchored by Character
Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership. Harrow’s holistic education is rooted in our core values of Courage, Humility, Honour, and Fellowship. By sowing the seeds of character during these formative years, we empower students to find their true north and navigate their life paths with conviction. Rebecca, from the Class of 2012, has carried this Harrow spirit into the wider world. From staying true to her passions during her academic journey to tempering her character through practical experience, she is now dedicated to the field of education. Today, let’s explore her story and the enduring impact of a Harrow education.

Awakening to Purpose
Pursuing Passion with Courage
Lighting the Path through Fellowship
Building on a solid academic foundation cultivated at Harrow, Rebecca leveraged her outstanding A-Level results to initially earn a place at her dream school, the University of the Arts London, to study Fashion Design. However, during her studies, she began to realize that her true calling lay in Psychology. Having the courage to follow her heart, she shared her career aspirations and personal reflections with her family, whose full support she won through her sincerity and resolve. When she returned to Harrow seeking guidance for this new chapter, the University Guidance Office provided the professional expertise and meticulous support needed to refine her application.
Harrow’s rigorous A-Level curriculum not only opened the doors to a top-tier global art institution but also equipped her with the robust academic capabilities and critical thinking skills that provided a strong foundational support for her cross-disciplinary application to an Ivy League university. Through her own hard work, the warmth of her family, and Harrow’s professional backing, Rebecca successfully transferred to Columbia University to study Psychology. While her academic focus shifted, her steadfast pursuit of her ideals and the courage nurtured at Harrow remained unchanged.

Character in the Details
A Lasting Lesson from a Single Moment
“When I look back on my time at Harrow, those century-old British traditions still resonate deeply with me,” Rebecca reflected during a recent profound conversation with the current Head of Harrow Beijing upon returning to campus. In a cultural context where Chinese families highly value historical heritage, the century of accumulation that Harrow carries is itself a silent yet powerful educational force. “The fact that a school has stood the test of time for over a hundred years proves that its educational philosophy contains irreplaceable, eternal value.” This reverence for and inheritance of tradition not only shaped Rebecca’s understanding of rules and etiquette but also profoundly influenced her behavior in countless small, everyday details.
Looking back on her four years at Harrow, Rebecca finds that the most profound educational impact often came from these everyday details. When reflecting on her most cherished memories, she doesn’t first think of hours spent in a classroom, but rather of a teacher, Miss Rowe, and a meaningful conversation during a literature trip to Hong Kong.

During that trip, as the group was checking out of their hotel, Miss Rowe visited Rebecca’s room. Seeing the unmade bed and litter on the floor, she asked a thought-provoking question: “We are here representing Harrow in our uniforms. What impression do you want to leave behind? Even if there is a cleaning crew, how do you want them to perceive our school and its students?” It wasn’t a harsh reprimand, but a sincere moment of guidance. She added, “It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you should at least tidy up after yourself.”
This simple yet powerful advice took root in Rebecca’s heart. Today, she instinctively pays attention to such details, whether it’s tidying a hotel room before checkout, organizing her desk after work, or even wiping down a public sink. “I find myself naturally thinking about the impression I leave for the person coming after me,” she admits. Rebecca reflects that while concepts like “Humility” and “Honour” felt abstract as a child, Miss Rowe’s guidance gave them real meaning. To wear the Harrow uniform is to represent the school’s reputation—that is Honour. To be mindful of others and tidy one’s environment is the essence of Humility and Fellowship.
This attention to detail and adherence to standards is not only reflected in behavior but is also externalized in Harrow’s iconic uniform standards. Rebecca clearly remembers that during her time as a Prefect and Deputy Head Girl, she personally hand-drew a six-step guide on “how to perfectly tie a tie” and posted it in every bathroom across the school. “Putting on the uniform, especially the moment you carefully tie your tie and button the top button, is actually a psychological cue—you are ready to embrace the day’s academic challenges.” To her, the Harrow uniform is by no means just an article of clothing; it represents a sense of pride, self-discipline, and the most direct practice of “Honour.” Taking off the uniform at the end of a long day of learning brings a natural sense of fulfillment and achievement.

Growth Through Experience
Forging Courage and Responsibility
Harrow’s unique Expedition Week was another cornerstone of Rebecca’s development. In this tradition, students are pushed out of their comfort zones to forge their character through real-world challenges.
“It was absolutely not a relaxing vacation, but rather a process of learning cooperation and responsibility through repeated ‘unexpected incidents’ and hardships,” Rebecca recalled of a bicycle expedition in Yunnan. At the time, the entire grade had to cycle continuously through the mountains for a week. Facing endless uphill climbs in muggy weather, many students initially complained about having to wear heavy and uncomfortable helmets all the time. That was until a younger girl accidentally fell while going downhill. Though she wasn’t seriously injured, when everyone saw the huge crack in her helmet, all complaints instantly turned into a profound respect for the rules. “The shock of that moment was more effective than ten thousand words of lecturing from a teacher. Even today, if I’m just riding a shared bike for one minute, I subconsciously check my safety gear.”
This experience of learning through hardship went far beyond the trip itself. Breaking through physical limits allowed everyone to complete seemingly “impossible” challenges; meanwhile, the British educational approach—rigorous yet firmly encouraging you with a “you can do it” attitude—always provided strength just when they were about to give up. These experiences not only honed her willpower but also taught her tolerance and responsibility within team collaboration, becoming the wellspring of courage for her to face life’s challenges later on.
Growth at Harrow is a dual cultivation of capability and responsibility. Rebecca served as a Prefect and Deputy Head Girl, actively planning school events and honing her leadership and communication skills. These experiences became vital assets in her professional career. Furthermore, the intensity of her final A-Level year taught her how to manage pressure and face challenges with steadfast courage—a resilience that remains one of her greatest strengths.
Continuing the Legacy
Bridging Psychology and Education
Rebecca’s passion for education was sparked by her upbringing. Her parents, unable to find a primary school that aligned with their vision, joined forces with other like-minded families to establish the very kindergarten and primary school she attended. This hands-on commitment to educational ideals deeply influenced Rebecca as she grew up.
After graduating from Columbia University, Rebecca explored various fields before realizing that education was her true calling. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she chose to dedicate herself to the sector, integrating her background in psychology into early childhood education to deepen her family’s educational philosophy. “Psychology allows me to better understand a child’s inner world, helping me build a stronger bridge between teaching and personal growth,” she explains.
Today, as an education professional and administrator, Rebecca understands the earnest intentions of her former Harrow teachers more profoundly than ever. During her recent conversation with the current Head of Harrow Beijing, they delved into the essence of education: true freedom is never unrestricted indulgence, but is instead built upon rules, responsibility, and deep-rooted character. Those seemingly strict uniform requirements and challenging expeditions were exactly the school’s way of setting high standards for its students, helping them to achieve genuine freedom and poise on the stage of life in the future.

From the halls of Harrow to the front lines of education, Rebecca carries forward the courage and humility instilled by her alma mater. Guided by her family’s legacy and the values of Honour and Fellowship, she continues to progress on a path she loves. This is the essence of a Harrow education: looking beyond the classroom to nourish character through diverse experiences, ensuring every student can find their direction and achieve their potential.
The Harrow story is always “to be continued.” We hope that every Harrovian, carrying the expectations and nourishment of their alma mater, will sail through life with courage and humility, upholding honour and fellowship as they lead with distinction and pass on the spirit of Harrow.
