From Harrow Beijing to New York University
The growth trajectory of a full-scholarship student

This brilliant CV belongs to Michael Z, a 2023 graduate of Harrow Beijing:

At Upper School, he was awarded the AISL Harrow full scholarship to study at Harrow Beijing.
At university, he received a full scholarship from New York University, majoring in Economics and Public Policy
He interned at a U.S. congressional office, the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and a renowned investment hedge fund.
He received an additional NYU scholarship created for a very small number of exceptionally outstanding students.

“New York University is a campus that breathes with the city.”

Michael says NYU is closely connected with Manhattan; courses, societies, and internship opportunities intertwine, and study and life blend seamlessly. Classmates from around the world bring diverse academic collisions and cultural perspectives. “Every day I study in real social settings – this is what I value greatly.”

Speaking of competencies, he places “leadership and self-drive” first.

At university, he founded a law students’ society, proactively connected resources on and off campus, and engaged in activities related to economics, law, and public affairs, thereby opening up internship opportunities and an academic-mentor network.

“Many of these foundational abilities came from Harrow Beijing.” Here, he founded Model United Nations and Economics societies, spoke frequently on stage, and organised events – practising leadership and communication; A Level study further honed his independent learning and time management.

“Using A Levels to apply to top U.S. universities carries no disadvantage.”

Michael states frankly that the academic depth and rigour of A Levels laid the groundwork for his higher-level course selection at an American university.

“I studied four A Level subjects at Harrow Beijing – Economics, Mathematics, Psychology, and Chinese – and received credit for an entire year, enabling me to enter advanced classes more quickly.” He also saw classmates gain admission to Yale, Columbia, Cornell, UC Berkeley and other top universities with A Levels. “The key is long-term accumulation and genuine academic interest.”

While studying international economics and trade in A Level Economics, he and his classmates proactively contacted the World Bank’s Beijing office, extending theory into discussions of real-world issues. “U.S. universities value why you choose their school, where you plan to apply what you learn after graduation, and what value you will create for society.”

During the application stage, he advises classmates to make full use of Harrow Beijing’s professional university guidance, rich clubs, and social-practice opportunities—state clearly and substantiate “academic passion + real action.”

Looking back at the rhythm from Upper School to university, Michael’s takeaway is: on the premise of securing academic performance, keep exploring different fields in steady, small, authentic steps, gradually “lighting up” interests and strengths into connected lines. “With more practice and reflection, you’ll know better how to choos – and invest your time and energy where it matters most.”
