Graduate Story|Malakai A: From a Young Science Enthusiast to a Confident Leader on the Road to Cambridge
At Harrow Beijing, the name Malakai leaves a lasting impression. This Year 13 graduate, who secured an offer to study Natural Sciences at Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, completed a remarkable journey of personal and academic growth at Harrow. Science, fitness, music, team captain—his story is one of focus and passion, and it was here at Harrow that he found both his stage and his direction.

From Chemistry Sets to a Cambridge Offer:
A Passion for Science Sparked Early
Malakai’s passion for science was ignited early on, thanks to his father—a former chemistry teacher—who gave him science kits and brought him to school science summer camps. It was there that young Malakai witnessed a demonstration where static electricity made a metal foil ring levitate—a moment that felt like magic and sparked a lifelong curiosity.
At Harrow Beijing, this curiosity was not only sustained but also elevated. The school provided a wealth of opportunities for him to deepen his knowledge. Teachers encouraged further exploration, such as the lunchtime micro-lectures where Oxbridge applicants presented their favorite topics—Malakai chose the first total synthesis of Vitamin B12, a highlight in his personal statement. He shares that Harrow’s academic program and faculty gave him more than knowledge—they gave him a platform to express and push beyond his limits.

Beyond Academics:
Harrow Shaped a More Confident, Well-Rounded Me
Before joining Harrow Beijing, Malakai was a quiet and reserved student. But the open atmosphere, inclusive community, and vibrant student life gradually transformed him into a confident young leader. “Making new friends in Year 12 pushed me to step out of my comfort zone,” he recalls. “The friendliness of both staff and students helped me settle in quickly, while house events, Sports Day, and House Music strengthened my sense of belonging.”
He is especially grateful to his chemistry teacher and Head of Year, who provided invaluable support for STEM Oxbridge applicants. Through structured group discussions and mock interviews, Malakai not only gained skills but also enjoyed the process—thanks to his teacher’s rare combination of academic rigor and warm humor.

A Full Life Beyond the Classroom:
Sports, Music and More
Outside academics, Malakai is passionate about sports and music. A dedicated gym-goer, he also played on the school football team and found his favorite sport in volleyball. He plays both bass and acoustic guitar, and performed in a school rock band that traveled to Malaysia for a “Battle of the Bands” competition. “For me, sports and music aren’t just hobbies—they’re vital ways to connect with others and decompress.”
His journey in volleyball is especially memorable. In 2023, he barely made the team and finished fifth. A year later, after intense training and leadership, he became captain and led his team to win the 2024 ACAMIS Championship in Hong Kong. “That sense of accomplishment was one of my proudest moments at Harrow.”

Structured University Guidance That Illuminates the Path
Harrow Beijing’s university guidance resources also played a pivotal role. From the moment he joined, Malakai had regular meetings with his guidance counselor to discuss academic goals, refine his subject interests, and build a strong profile. He took part in the 2024 UK Chemistry Olympiad and won a gold medal—an impressive achievement that greatly enhanced his Cambridge application.

What’s even more remarkable is that Harrow Beijing offers more than just academic excellence — it provides a holistic education that nurtures character, fosters intellectual challenge, and cultivates leadership.
“At Harrow,” Malakai reflects, “I met so many peers who were just as passionate about STEM as I was. Working with them, exchanging ideas and inspiring each other, was an experience I never had before.”
From a boy fascinated by chemistry sets to a young man ready to walk through the halls of Cambridge, Malakai’s journey is a testament to Harrow Beijing’s holistic education. More than an academic institution, Harrow is a launchpad for potential, growth, and purpose. What Harrow gives is not just an offer letter—it’s a way of thinking and a life philosophy that lasts a lifetime.
